Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas what might be happening with my poor kitty cat. I've taken my kitty to the vet three times in the past three days, but two vets at the same clinic don't seem to be able to figure out what is going on with the kitty. Let me provide a little background.

Last Thursday, my cat had a pretty bad coughing fit. He then threw up a bit of food. I thought everything was fine, and went back to work at the computer. A few minutes later, my cat jumped on my lap, and then I noticed he was drooling. This continued for an hour or so, so I called the vet. The vet had us come in that same day. The vet checked the cat's throat for obstructions, but didn't find anything, so she gave the cat anti-nausea medicine and sent us home. The drooling got better with the anti-nausea medication.

The next morning, Friday, my cat started howling and following me around the house. He wouldn't sit down. He just was crying non-stop. So I made a second appt. with the vet. The vet again checked for obstructions in his throat and examined him. She said that he had a lot of stool that he hadn't passed, so she gave him oral laxatives and hairball remedy to get things moving. I gave the cat two doses of the laxative and two doses of hairball remedy Friday night, but he did not have a bowel movement. That night my cat was very lethargic and wouldn't eat or drink anything. Actually, he tried to eat one piece of food, and started gagging and choking. Later, he threw up a bit of yellowish stuff, and then threw up some pink--almost a fuchsia-colored--liquid with small pieces of what looked like pieces of skin (?), but the color was so bizarre, almost a hot-pink, that I have no clue what this could have been. I checked around the house for something the cat could have eaten, but didn't find anything.

I took the cat back to the vet on Saturday morning. The vet took several x-rays, which showed no obstructions. She did a CBC blood test. The results will be back tomorrow. She also gave him a shot of antibiotics and gave him a shot to rehydrate him since he was getting dehydrated from not drinking. Saturday night the cat seemed to be doing much better. He was eating and drinking a little bit. But still no bowel movement. The vet said not to give him any more of the oral laxatives, so I haven't.

Today, Sunday, my cat is a little more alert. But now when he tries to eat, he gags and chokes for several minutes after eating a little bit. He licks his lips a lot, too. I've tried to give him soft food, but he won't eat that. He seems to be losing a lot of weight, too. He's a Cornish Rex, so he's thin anyway, but going for four days now without eating much of anything is taking its toll. I'm really worried and not sure what to do. I'm planning to take my kitty back to the vet tomorrow. This is just very worrisome.

Oh, I should also mention that my cat was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy about four years ago. I give him a fourth of a pill of atenolol each day. Some of my cat's symptoms seem to suggest renal failure, which I understand can be caused by reduced circulation to the kidneys due to cardiomyopathy. I hope that's not what's going on.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thank you very much for any help.

I'm sorry that your kitty is going through such a hard time. :(

I do hope that he will get better.

I wish I knew what could be wrong, sounds like the vet has done what he can so far, but it just might be something that he can't see yet. I hope with this next vet visit he will find something more concrete & be able to help him right away.

Thanks, Sapphire. The vet has put the cat on antibiotics and steroids, and he is doing much better now. The vet also did a scope to see if he had any blockages. He didn't. So I'm crossing my fingers that my kitty will be back to normal very soon. Thanks for your well wishes.
