I was forced into naming my cats by the Vet's secretary.
I had two DSH black & whites and was just going to call them cat A and cat B, since they don't really respond to their names. While establishing their new Vet records, the secretary sniffed her disdain for my lack of creativity and somewhat insisted that they have names.
Therefore, they became Alpha and Beta (Greek alaphabet A and B). She seemed ok with that. . .!
heheh I like that one Don :)

Well I say thanks to the vets secretary on behalf of your 2 cats!
I think they're very "cool" cat names !
You say they do not respond... I'm sure if you keep on calling them by their names ALL the time they will learn very quickly ! :)

Well, in my experience with a lifetime of cats, they respond to tone and volume, but I really don't think they recognize the phonetics of thier names.

Yes I agree they respond alot to what Orion says but I also believe that they "learn" their names too...or if you'd rather the "sound" of their name I used to call my 2 and either would come....but i can guarantee that at 2 & 1/2 yrs they now know" whose who" ! :)

We've named our new kitten Gracie. The only problem is that the name is hard for me to remember for some reason. I still have the name for my recently departed Nikki stuck in my brain. And hub started calling the new kitty Baby Girl. Now Baby Girl comes to mind before Gracie does. I wonder what I should do?

Yeah that could work Lynn.
You know, I call my babies so many different names, it's a wonder how they know which is which when I call them.
LOL...my fiance has taken to calling EJ "Fuzzball" because he's soo hairy, so it's taken off with me & we call him fuzzball more than EJ. :D We call Lucy, "babygirl" alot too.

Hello!
My two kittens are called Marmalade & Sambuca...
Marmalade is a tortoise-shell long-hair, while Sambuca is a black short-hair, and they are full sister and brother, respectively...
My Dad & I have a bunch of names for them...
Marmalade has Marmy, Marm, Fluffy, Uh-Oh, and a couple of others that I cannot recall at this particular moment in time...
Sambuca has Buca, Fuzzy, and Oh-No... He might have others, but I cannot remember them at the moment, either...
Marmalade & Sambuca are in my avatar, and that picture was taken exactly 2 years ago...

:fcwelcome: brootsie, I'm glad that you joined us here. :)
That's so great how you saved your babies, I love hearing stories of kind hearted people taking in strays to give them a good home. Wonderful people like yourself save them from the horrors of being outside or in a shelter for a LONG time.
Welcome to FC, Brootsie. :wavey:

I have one baby named Tillie, she is a maine coon. We have one who recently passed away, his name was Clarence. We adopted Tillie from Petsmart, but they got her from a no kill shelter. She is my pride and joy. She has asthma and spinal muscular atrophy, but she is a sweet little kittie. I don't know what would have happened to her if we hadn't have adopted her. She is such a blessing.

Names I've used in the past:
Kiki
Pandora
Angel
Whiskey
Mouse
Doc
Sufi (Sultan Muhammed al Sufi was his registered name)
Rusty
Muffin (short for Ragamuffin - hub found him crying under a bush in the middle of a thunderstorm - he was unweaned, about 4 weeks old - hub brought home the sleeping baby in his shirt pocket - we were going to find someone to take him as we had two other cats at the time, but he bonded to me and I had to keep him - I was his mommy for life)
Gabriel
Nikki (Prince's Darling Nikki - I was a "bit" of a Prince / The Artist fan at the time I got her... lol)

MY 13 year old's name is Morphia, after the Greek god of sleep and dreams, because she always had a sleepy look to her. Her brother's name was Bright Eyes because he looked wide awake alot. The street kitten that we picked up/lured in last August is Skit, because A) she's a skittish kitty, and B) she was living across the street from the Theatre where we were working. We named our 3rd cat after Little Orphan Annie (she was sitting in a carrier on our porch one evening when I came home), but she was too big/old for "Annie," so we call her Anna. One of the first cats I had was named "Neko," which is Japanese for cat, and at the time I was taking Japanese
I have had kitties named: Patches, Ruby, Miss Callie, Pepper, and Bambi.
I have had 3 dogs named Mia, Missy, and Perotia.
I have fostered kittens named, Ty, Mo, Chloe, Blackie, OH no. (he was an escape artist lol) Jeffrey, Molly, Muffin, Micky, Tink.
Now I just have one cat named Lucy.:D

Jamie sorry to hear about Bandit.
I have had lots of cats as pets throughout my life and Yes, you are very correct in saying that no other cat will ever replace him as (same breed or not) they all have their different characters just like us!! But, I'm sure you will find an other whose life you can share.
Here's a beautiful poem I came across a long while ago..
The Rainbow Bridge
By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.
For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.
No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.
They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears ***** forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.
For just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
The time of their parting is over at last.
The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together.
Last year I lost my best friend, my 17 year old
white cat named Boofy. One year before that his
sister passed away, she was 16 then and her name
was Cauly.
Boofy suffered from Chronic Renal Failure for about one
year before he died. I spent a lot of time with him
helping him to go through it and nursing him.
I still miss him.
The cats we now have are:
Ben, he is a 5 year old male.
Tabby, he is a 3 year old Main Coon
Little Bear, an all gray male cat
Ricky, he is a ginger boy of 1 year old
Sammy, he is 12 weeks old now and totally white.

I did have a tortoiseshell nervous girl, lost her November 3rd 2008, partly to kidney disease, partly because she developed a tumour in her bladder and was in a lot of pain :( Her name was Beauty.
Now we have got a grey and white boy called Dylan, who decided he wanted to come home with me from the rescue where I volunteer. :)

My female gray tabby - Martha (Rescue named her. I actually call her Bobbi most of the time now)
My male brown & white tabby - Jethro (Was watching NCIS when he showed up. The name just fit so well!)
My family cat that I picked out 11 years ago, tortoiseshell with white paws & chest - Fritz (No clue where I got that name from, but I love it)

haha yeah..I think so too. Unlike dogs, cats don't usually respond or get all excited when you call them.. they are just so sleek & mysterious.. wonderful creatures!!
My baby's name is Uliko Chowder. But she doesn't know that.
She's often called Uli.. A 2 month-old pouncing little furball. :)
Suzy's Lucy.. :)
sooo cute ^_^

My cats tend to be a little on the excited side when I call to them. When I come home from work I call to them & the come to me. Even sometimes when I just feel like I will call to them & they come. Now of course they don't come all the time, but it's still cool to see them get a little happy & come trotting by when I call to them. :)
Plus they all seem to know their names. I think it's more the inflections in my voice that they know which 1 I'm calling to etc..

I agree!!!!!! Our 2 cats (bother & sister respond 3/4 of the time one calls them.. ) I think they definitely DO respond to the sound/ tone of their names, when they want to! It also depends alot on their characters and the
"relationship" one has with them... (from experience)

I have 3 indoor cats!
Lucky...a beautiful himalayian male with one beautiful turquoise eye, the other one is stitched down (removed when he was a 4 month old baby) so it looks like he is sleeping..he is around 6 yrs old and I got him a 4 months from our vets office, he was found in a dumpster and brought into the vets where they did an eye innoculation, he had broken ribs and they declawed his front paws and neutered him...the name is because he was Lucky we adopted him and we were Lucky to have him...he is very intelligent and loving and the love of my life!
Little Miss CoCo Chanel...is a female black and orange and white Calico...she is named after the famous designer CoCo Chanel because she is one of a kind designer kitty...she is around 4 1/2 yrs old...
Little Bit...is a female grey and orange and white Calico and CoCo's sister. She was the tinest of the litter ( litter of 3 the other one being Sweet Pea whom was adopted out) but now is the biggest...lol...ironic...:)
Both my girls were born under an old car on our property here in Florida during hurricane season...the mother was a feral cat and abandoned the 3 of them when they were around 3 weeks old...I found them one day while out talking to my husband when he returned to work...CoCo came out from under the car and she couldnt even walk through the grass she was so tiny and screaming her head off..my husband took her and returned her under the car tellling me to just leave them alone because the mother would come back looking for them...the next day I was off from work and went out there with some food and water on a big cookie sheet..well CoCo decided to come out and was crying and all I could see was her little pink mouth, I dropped all the food and water and ran over to her and snatched her up then looked under the car to find her other two sissies Little Bit and Sweet Pea. Took them all into the house cleared my drainboard and put them all in the sink and bathed them then wrapped them all in a big towel with just their heads sticking out and rocked them in my recliner..I was in heaven! :) Hubby came home and I had them all fixed up in my garden bathtub with towels and food and water etc...I ended up keeping two of them and adopting out Sweet Pea...I bottlefed them 3 times a day for 4 months (Mothers milk in a dry form) even logged it every day and then trained them to use the litter box. They are my kids and I love them sooooo much....very special little babies to me...

05-04-2011, 03:46 PM
I have 8 cats, all house cats, i call them Sabbi, Gizmo, Tigger, Minstral, Dinky and Dusty, (all girls) my boys are Bert and Ernie.
Sabbi and Gizmo are sisters who are now 10 years old, we've had them since 6 weeks old. Tigger is 9 now and came to us at about 1 year old, through Cat Protection, Minstral we are not sure of her age but we think she's about 10 years of age, a friend asked us to take her, they found her in a garden searching for food so now she need no longer search. Dinky, we found one morning in the garden, she was only a kitten and ran away when approached, she was sleeping under next doors garden shed. It took weeks and weeks of patience to gain her trust, we fed her every day and gradually we were able to entice her into the house, glad to say she stayed, she is now 6 years old. Dusty is my little treasure and is now 1 and a half years old, she is Minstrals daughter, one day just over a year and a half ago Minstral managed to get out a window and spent the whole day in our back garden waiting for a gentleman friend, she found one :) Dusty is the result of that meeting. Bert and Ernie are my big boys, and are 3 years old last December, and are Neutered. They belonged to a neighbour but at 12 weeks old were being put out all night, in wintertime. We used to feel so sorry for them but they weren't ours, anyway, she got them neutered at 6 months old and the ginger cat (Ernie) had an internal bleed so the vet had to operate, afterwards he was stitched up and as the neighbour had 2 young children, she asked if we would look after him for the ten days till he got his stitches removed. During that time Bert came to the back window looking for his brother, so we let him in to see Ernie, When the stitches were removed, the neighbour fed Ernie, put him out and he came straight back to us, Bert followed, they eventually were spending more time in our house than their own one, so our neighbour asked us if we would take them on a permanent basis as they wanted to get a dog. So Bert And Ernie have been living with us ever since. Bert is my avatar.

Smudge is 12 and is getting a bit deaf. Bruno is about 10 and he has a heart murmur. I can't post pictures of them yet because I'm not allowed but I will as soon as I can.

I just have one cat. His name is Frodo (you know, Lord of the Rings and all that), but he had so many nicknames that I rarely call him that. There's Afro, Alfie, Bub, Fromister, Fluffy Mittens, Buddy, and (my favorite) The Fro. ;)
