Well there heart is in the right place, its basically life in prison if no buddy adopts them.

A much better idea long term is to make it illegal to own or have an intact cat, but I don't see that happening anytime soon..

What's better Runswalken, putting them in a shelter where they will be eventually put down? Leaving them outside to get hurt/killed?

Yes it's not fun for the cat to be in a shelter, but it's better than the alternative.

Here's a link to a site that has a listing of shelters grouped by area:

What's sad about shelters is that of the 8 million animals that go into them about 3 million are euthanized. What makes this even more sad is that annually 17 million people are looking for pets.

I am working for a marketing company that is trying to change this number through a campaign with the Humane Society, Maddie's Fund and the Ad Council. The campaign is trying to change the image of the shelter pet so precarious situations don't happen.

I am sure that most shelters do as well as they can with the scanty resources that they have. The ASPCA seems to vary by state. I remember, in one state, reading about a pile of dead animals being seen next to one by school children on their way home. The people who ran it were alcoholics and I question whether they kept the animals for the required two weeks. It was in the newspaper, and heartbreaking.
But then there is the ASPCA shelter in New York, which is often on tv and a shining example to the country. The laws even are favorable to animals.
I think in areas in which people are close to starving it is hard to muster money to help unwanted pets.
I have heard, though, that if you ever have a need to interact with a no kill shelter, be sure to inquire as to what happens to animals that are not adoptable. Some no kills will just cycle an animal into a kill shelter when nobody wants them.
I so much agree that it is such good policy to be sure an animal is neutered before being adopted. I don't think society would tolerate so many orphaned human children. If it were illegal to kill an animal who cannot be adopted I think the laws would be changed and there would be more responsibility in how we deal with our pets.
I think there are also cultural differences in the country, dealing with animals; which kind of underscores why we need more laws to protect them.

Education is the solution......people need to realize that once they adopt a cat or dog there are responsiblities that go along with this......all cats and dogs that are in shelters are usually already spayed or neutered......

I live in a small town here in ohio and another small town about 12 miles from me alot of people have been supporting the cat shelter that opened 10 years ago...they didnt turn down any animal...but things got out of hand..they were also a no kill shelter....they had vets checking animals and they also had a low cost spay/neuter program that anyone could take there cats and have them fixed.....the cost was males were $25.00 and females were $35.00...now you cant beat those prices but if you cant feed your kids you cant afford to fix the cat.......dont get one....

anyway my story is that the no kill shelter ended up in trouble cause they had over 300 cats.....some sick some needing medication....well some commissioners got wind and dont really know who took all the cats but they were wisked out of the shelter and disappeared....all because they had heard that the shelter would now be a kill shelter....which it is.....i have heard that if they have to many of one color they kill a few....if there are to many kittens they get rid of them....dont know if there is any truth to this yet but I will find out...the cat shelter is a very touchy subject right now in myh town since many many donated to this shelter as I did.....it was a non profit shelter running solely on volunteers and money made from bingo games and other charity things....

We are never going to fix the over population as long as there are ignorant people that dont know the first thing about owning a pet......

this is my opinion i will step down from my soap box now....

My cats are all fixed and do not go outside.....i care to much for my animals to let them run loose.....my 23 year old cat named toe loves the back porch which is screened...and my bobtail thumper loves to watch the birds... It makes me sick to see cats running and you know they belong to someone when you see one that weighs about 17 pounds out running the streets.....
