Please help me! My friend & I have a $10 bet going. He says that when a cat rolls back & forth (from side to side) that it is greeting you (saying "hello"). I say it means the cat likes you & wants to play. Who's right? I need this answered ASAP! Thanks

Welcome to the Fat Cat Forum, glad that you joined us. :)

I would say that it could be both things. It depends on what you are doing when your cat is rolling back & forth.

Like my cat, I know he wants to play when he does that. He will lay on his belly, & twist around & look all cute. So, I scratch his belly & then play with him a little bit.

He's never done that when I come home, he's always at the door to say HI & meow at me. So for my cat, when he does that it's to play & get his belly scratched.

Sapphire,
Thanks for responding, but if you had to choose ONE reason (greeting you or wanting to play with you), which would it be?

Well dstsprite, I would have to say based on my cat, that it would be when he wants to play. :)

Sapphire,
Thanks again for responding. In my opinion, my friend owes me $10 (thanks to you), but he probably won't pay me. Also, would you happen to know a website, not a forum, I can go to that will answer the question (rolling back & forth) for me? He's looking for me to support my theory by citing a professional source. He's SO technical about this.

You could probably Google the information you are seeking. Put something in like "cat information" or "cat behavior" & you will most likely find what you are seeking.

I think it indicates a desire for play or activity also - but, is all this research you're about to do worth $10 (at today's dollars) ?

:D

I know what you mean about the value of $10, but to answer your question, yeah, it's worth it. (You'd have to know my friend to understand.) We're always betting each other about something. Thanks for replying.

So dstsprite have you found out any proof so you can win the bet?

I'm thinking more & more that it's do to them wanting to play.

No, I haven't found any websites that specifically address a cat's rolling back & forth. I am getting VERY frustrated because I can't find anything. Thanks for helping me though. I'm still searching--I just know it's out there.

Well I'm pretty sure that you are right though dstsprite.

I've been watching my cat EJ & when he wants to play with me or my fiance is when he moves back & forth, it's like he's trying to get our attention so we can play with him.

my cat it's usually wanting t play when she does that. When She wants to say hello she either runs up to me and lets out a sort of inquisitive meow or rubs up against my legs.

My cat will roll around when she wants attention. Sometimes she'll rub up against my legs and when I reach down to pet her she sort of flops over on her side. lol It's really cute. But what gets me is she hates for her belly to be rubbed so I don't know why she does it.
