Why do the moon change its shape?

It's really an interesting phenomenon but I think there must be an explanation for it scientifically. Some nights the moon has a particular shape very much different at some other particular nights. How come this is so?

If I recall correctly it is all related to the different phases of the moon. When the moon is in different phases the size and shape change. What you see when you look at the moon will vary depending on it’s location in relationship with the sun and the earth.
