I hate to put them as outside cats, but this other one refuse to use her littler box. When she does use it she scratches litter out all over the place and still none where it is suposed to go.

I have a cat that is going to be finding himself outside also. I put the litter box in the bathroom, and he will walk right by the box to go poop in the bathtub, it doesn't matter how clean the box is he does it when he gets the notion to do so.

One of our cats used the bathtub, too. Just so close, I mean. Another foot or two and she'd have used the toilet. Now why won't they do that? But even then, I hate putting them out. Sooner or later, they just run away or get killed. I can't take that.

Same here with our cats. There's a particular place in the house where they do their thing and we keep on cleaning it if we won't notice them. It's very hard to keep track of them because they are very sneaky.

I hate the idea of having your cats put out. I realize that the cat was making a mess (and probably a stink)...but putting it out makes it susceptible to fights, disease, and accidents (like hit by car). I think it would be more humane to either get a good book on housetraining a hard to train cat or placing the cat up for someone that may be able to train them. You don't want to find the cat you once loved on the curb one morning.:(

I hate the idea of putting a cat outside, but I have had a couple that no matter what would not use the litter box for anything, I had one that would get in the box, get out of it and walk right off and go elsewhere, he would not even do his business in a clean box.

I just have a thought...
My cat is a very messy litterbox kinda guy. It was really frustrating. What I did was this...I got a litter box with a lid, that way no matter what it would be very hard to start throwing the litter and other mess around. His litter box was also placed on a fairly large square of newspaper in our storage room in the basement. This way when he does make a mess, it makes it easier to clean it up. If the cat is missing the litterbox all together, or going elsewhere, what has really worked for me in the past was locking the cat in the bathroom for 5-7 days with the litterbox, and food and stuff. Of course we went into visit him and make sure he was ok, normal interactions. If you place his food in an area where he has gone to the bathroom he will not go there anymore as cats don't eat where they go. I found the bathroom/litterbox thing really effective. My cat recently just seemed to lose all his litterbox training so I used that technique again, and he's right back on track.
