Maine Coon Cat Introduction

The large and beautiful Maine Coon is today one of the most popular cat breeds. Maine Coon cats are famous for their large size.

Description

Large in size; muscular, broad-chested body with wide-set legs and large paws; medium-wide head with medium-long nose; large, tufted ears; large, wide-set eyes; heavy, shaggy coat with longer hair on stomach, flanks, and tail.

A long and heavy coat often makes these cats seem even larger. Their shaggy but smooth hair is shorter on the shoulders and longer on the stomach, and some Maine Coon cats have an impressive ruff on their chests.

Maine Coon cats come in many colours and patterns, although they are best known for the brown tabby variety. Here are some of the most common patterns:

Solid colours: Include black, white, orange, blue or cream.

Bi-colour: Predominantly white with patches of one other colour.

Tortoiseshell or Calico: A patchy pattern made up of three or more distinct colours (usually black, orange, and cream/white).

Tabby: A darker stripy pattern on a lighter background colour; most often brown, orange, blue, or cream. Nose and paw pad colours usually correspond to predominant coat colour, varying from pink to black.

The Maine Coon is a solid, rugged cat and America's oldest natural longhaired breed.

Characteristics and Temperament

Maine Coon cats are noted for their gentleness and friendliness. They are especially good with children and other pets.

Despite their large size, these cats don't make a lot of noise - a quiet meow is all Maine Coon cats need to get their message across.

Owners and breeders who share their lives with this magnificent giant confirm that many of these cats are very fond of water - whether getting into their owners' tub, or just dipping their paws in their own water bowl.

Special Needs

Maine Coon cats are relatively easy to keep. Their coat requires only a combing twice a week to minimize matting and shedding hair. They are a sturdy and healthy breed and are known for their easy-going adaptable personality.

Maine Coon cats make excellent companions for large, active families that also enjoy having dogs and other animals around.

In addition, their hardiness and ease of kittening make them a satisfying first breed for the novice breeder.

Maine Coons are great, I have had one for 13 years, yes they are big lap cats, she doesn't mind the other animals, but she is also territorial, she doesn't let the other cat we have, or the dog forget who was here first! With a hiss or gentle swat of her paw, she keeps on top of things, and like you said, for a big cat, she has a soft meow, and they seem to like following their owners around the house. Love them

Actually it's rather important that you get your Maine Coon Cat used to being combed on the belly and the britches.
My Samantha didn't like having her britches combed and would run off.
The soft fur on the belly and britches can easily devolve mats which quickly grow to enormous size and have to be cut out.
Mats on the britches are especially troublesome, very bad things can happen if they get out of hand.
